one thing that still makes me impressed about these drivers back then is that they were able to have enough strength to hold onto the steering with one hand while the other is just shifting at the same time.

There was so much that a technical genius like Schumacher had to work with in the Ferrari when he arrived. Alesi was coping with, and thereby perpetuating, the flaws by relying on a very responsive front-end. He exploited raw skill, an unusual ability to work at a punishing rate, and fly-like reflexes, culminating in a style that naturally could dance around a rubbish rear-end. This car's character persisted throughout his time with the team. Schumacher rebuilt the car by filling in the gaps, then added ruthless consistency and even more extraordinary driving talent to boot.

A brutal era. All these drivers participated in the 1969 Italian GP. Bruce McLaren died June 2, 1970. Piers Courage died June 21, 1970 Jochen Rindt died September 5, 1970. Pedro Rodriguez died July 11, 1971. Jo Siffert died October 24, 1971. Silvio Moser died May 26, 1974. Graham Hill died November 29, 1975. Except for Hill who died in a plane crash, all were killed in a motor racing incident.

Erano epoche magiche e irripetibili.

If these people could jump into the future and see a modern GP operation, they would think they were in another planet. The irony is, yes, cars are a lot faster now, but not that much faster when we consider the enormous leap in technology. Yes, there are new chicanes at Monza, but pole time by Rindt in 69 was 1:25.5, and in 2023 Sainz pole was 1:21.9. What I mean to say is, 54 years later, for someone on the stands, a car goes only 3.5 seconds faster per lap, and the top speed for those 1969 cars was pretty impressive too, over 200 mph.

Thanks for this great video, even if you can't hear the speaker's commentary. But thanks to Deepl, I can at least express my thanks in the local language. The racecars from the 1960s to the 1970s were the most beautiful and hottest in Formula 1 history, at least that's how I see it. The sound and the tracks, the whole atmosphere at the races never came back. Of course it was sad for all the drivers who lost their lives, but that's still the case today.
